Comments about Pentel Twist-Erase III 0.5 Mechanical Pencil:
The writing end (7/8 inch long) is all stainless steel; there is no plastic to crack or break. As mechanical pencils go, it is indestructible. And the extreme tip (1/8 inch long) has a very small diameter so you don't have to hold the pencil perpendicular to the paper - you can lean it over (and I do) and the pencil will still write. With a thick tip it won't write unless you push the lead further out, which often results in breaking the lead, a real nuisance.
The eraser is superb; there is no smearing of the lead on the paper - it all comes off and can be blown or wiped away. And it is actually 1-1/8 inches long, but nestled inside a rigid tube for support; then when you use up the exposed eraser, just rotate the opposite ends of the pencil relative to each other, and continue erasing. I do a lot of erasing but I can go a long time before replacing the eraser with a refill.
I've thrown away most of my other mechanical pencils and now keep four of these pencils in different rooms and spaces in my apartment.
The only catch is that the stores in my town don't sell eraser refills, so I buy them online
