Comments about Staedtler Mars Technico Lead Holder:

I got one of these as a present from my Dad when I was 12 years old and i thought it was the Bee's knees. I suspect the primary aim was to stop me chewing the ends of pencils while I cogitated! It worked. And worked. And worked. I am now retired but it still works... better than I do in fact. It has been all over the place with me. I have been the object of envy and the victim of several devious conspiracies to deprive me of my treasure but I have always managed to keep my pencil.

Whenever I see the replacement leads with the little metal caps on sale I buy them. I seem to remember there being a point sharpener inside the push button but if so it has lost its bite. I shape the leads with emery boards into a chisel anyway and use the pencil for calligraphy and sketching as well as every day use. It brings a little style to my shopping lists and post it notes. So much friendlier than the brittle-leaded, scratchy, clicking mechanical pencils used now.

      • Q:

Does a push of the end button advance the lead automatically, or does a push just release the jaws to allow movement of the lead?

        • A:

Pushing the end button releases the jaws in the front allowing it to advance. Also the back button when pulled off has a sharpener. It's not as fine as some after market versions but better than nothing.
