Comments about Safco Adjustable Shelf Literature Organizer:

This product is not bad for the price. The only less expensive, similar product I could find was a solid cardboard one ("Banker's box" style), and that wouldn't last a week around our twin boys.

I bought two of these; one to organize the boys' coloring books and worksheets in the breakfast room, one for my office. We print lots of interesting worksheets and coloring pages; homeschooling them and prepping them for Kindergarten creates a lot of paper piles! I put the first in our kitchen, on top of a rolling flat file for their arts and crafts storage.

THe instructions aren't the best; it assembles easily, and you only need a hammer, a plastic bowl of water (to soak the dowels in, so the glue activates), and some wood glue (optional).

    To avoid problems during assembly:

After soaking, put the dowels in the **verticals first**, and hammer them down far. BE SURE they are set in as much as you can; I accidentally hammered through the bottom with a couple of dowels, and through the top once, because I didn't hammer them in far enough and the MDF is about a 1/2 inch. The second one, I did much better.

Also, BE SURE you know which side is which. The center has holes on both sides for the shelf dowels. It's easy to undo if you make a mistake.

It's relatively sturdy; I added a bead line of wood glue to the overlaps (between the dowels).

The verticals and horizontals are MDF. The 10 shelves are thin plyboard with plastic covers on the front, and the shelf dowels are metal. The back is thin cardboard with finishing nails; I wish it was thin plyboard like the shelves, or even balsa. I will probably have to replace it at some point, but it seems fine for our purposes. If placed flush to a wall, the backboard would not pose a problem.

The bottom is unfinished MDF, and I will be adding contact paper or sticky-backed felt to the bottom, so that it doesn't scratch my desktop.

I expect many years of use from these lit sorters, with some care and possibly some refurbishing in a few years. I wish I had time to improve them now -- I'd add backboards and the felt, maybe cover the plain gray with some cool marbled contact paper for some pizazz -- but I am satisfied with the clean look, size, utility, and price of these lit sorters.

Although I am a writer, I received nothing for writing this review. I just think it's a decent product for the price, and that the 1 star blurb was unrealistic. If you are used to assembling this type of "furniture", you will like this piece's blend of quality and value.

    A waste of money
