I purchased this scanner with very few requirements: 1) It must scan Legal (8.5x11) documents 2) It must have a small footprint (preferably fit into a drawer when not in use) 3) It must work without a lot of hassle. It meets the first two requirements wonderfully. It is not entirely hassle free, but it gets the job done. The biggest hassle is learning how to feed paper so that they are fed in immediately and don't skew as the feed through. That sounds simple, but there is a real art to getting the scanner to grab your document as it starts its scan. I found that placing a small book in front of the scanner (to bring the paper up to the height of the feed slot) helps, as does applying enough pressure to the trailing edge of the document to give the paper a little bulge - pressing it gently into the feed slot. There are two tiny design modifications that would make this scanner much better: 1) The upper edge of the feed-in slot should be sloped. As it is (square edged) paper tends to catch as you try to feed it in. A sloped top edge would guide the paper easier. 2) The bottom edge of the out-feed area should slope down, so paper naturally slides away from the scanner as it is ejected from the scanner. As it is, the flat shelf on the out-feed area is just enough to hold the trailing edge of a page, which gets in the way of the next page to feed through the scanner.

I still cannot connect to wifi. In order to networking DPS must be enabled on my router ATT Uverse 2Wire. There's no DPS setting on the router so then there's a string of directions to set It wants a router with dps which my 2wire ATT doesn't have. Having to add To DPS is beyond me. The directions are way too complicated. Even the USB setup directions were hard to follow. I've worked with computers since 1986 (remember the IBM PC) and am able to solve most problems. There are many different setups to be done. Some didn't run. Now USB is working but the Scan from Scanner button needs Document Capture installed and it doesn't even load.

This is terrible!! I can't figure out how to use this thing!! I was able to download it into my computer, but after that, I could not understand the instructions! An item as expensive as this should be more user friendly on it's instructions!!!

Good portable Scanner

Comments about Epson WorkForce DS-40 Wireless Portable Color Scanner, 600 x 600 dpi:

This is a great portable scanner. It allows me to easily carry and use via usb to scan as long as I have power. It has Wi-Fi capability. I use it more via usb due to the unavailability of Wi-Fi. I did not give it a 4-5 star because I could not connect it to my "Neat" programing. Epson needs to work with the Neat company to get the Epson drivers as part of the "Neat" program. Neat has stopped supporting their scanners. It would be great if Epson could replace this void. Neat is focusing on programing only.

Had this for a month and been happy with it.

By

from Indiana, United States

Comments about Epson WorkForce DS-40 Wireless Portable Color Scanner, 600 x 600 dpi:

Bought this due to my all in one printer being too bulky to transport it from job to job. First used the WiFi but the batteries didn't last long so I switch to the USB method and it works even better since it gets the power from it. Scanning is easy from the program and saving is a breeze. The only issue is once in a while you do get a paper jam but it was easy to fix.

Wi-Fi connection failed

By

from Jersey City, NJ, United States

Comments about Epson WorkForce DS-40 Wireless Portable Color Scanner, 600 x 600 dpi:

I failed connecting this scanner even using AP mode. But Wi-Fi feature is the reason I bought this model. I followed "How do I manually connect to a Wi-Fi router using EpsonNet Config?". I am not very sure about step 3 "Connect the computer to the scanner using a direct Wi-Fi connection. " what does 'direct Wi-Fi connection' mean?

Works like a charm everytime

Comments about Epson WorkForce DS-40 Wireless Portable Color Scanner, 600 x 600 dpi:

I bought my Epson Workforce DS-40 about six weeks ago. One has to read the instructions carefully and review what other users had to say and what they learned about using this particular product. It has a high learning curve to get the maximum use. There are a number of nuances which may have a negative impact on different users. The learning curve is not so bad that it can't be conquered. It's learning to fly an airplane, but much safer. My advice to users that have little or no experience using scanners. 1. Read the instructions on using the product. 2. Use the product. 3. Practice. 4. Read the instructions on using the desired application software. 5. Practice using a single application to gain confidence. 6. If you run into a problem. 7. Try again and don't give up. 8. Slowly add an additional application.
9. There are all sorts of YOUTUBE videos out there; watch them even if they are for different portable scanners. 10. Learn from your and other people's mistakes. 11. Patience and practice makes perfect!
