Comments about Pentel Super Hi-Polymer Lead Refill:

After watching me struggle with #2 wooden pencils, my dad brought home a mechanical pencil with 3H lead and changed my life. I could do homework for hours without smudging a page, and it did not break constantly, even though I use a lot of pressure. I've been practicing the secret of 3H (now simply "H") lead for 57 years, so when Pentel produced a hi-polymer line, it was like a gift from the gods. Only connoisseurs get this crazy about pencil lead, but if you love a good writing instrument, you know what a difference lead quality makes. Until they invent one that writes by itself, Pentel pencils and hi-polymer leads will remain among the world's most perfect creations: uniquely un-improvable.

      • Q:

What is the difference in the quality of the different Pentel Hi-Polymer leads? Will the cheaper H or B work as well as the HB?

          A:

The quality of the Pentel lead is the same. If you don't mind a softer lead and do not have an application that requires #2 equivalent lead, the H lead writes as well.

      • Q:

What is the difference between the Pentel lead refills that are HB or H. Does it effect the quality or the ease of use?
        Asked on 4/28/2011 by Anonymous

        1 answer

        • Staff Reviewer

          A:

HB and H indicate the hardness of the lead, with HB being standard (comparable to #2 lead) and H being a lighter grade (comparable to #3 lead).
