I use these pens in a Literacy Workstation in my Kindergarten classroom and they have been going strong for a month now! The kids enjoy the buzzes and noises, and it has built their fine motor skills by having them click on the bubble beside the correct answer. I will be using these in the word work center all year! The noise is quiet even at it's maximum - which is a good thing!!

Ace does not work on big kids cards

Ace DOES NOT work on the "Big Kid" cards. I have tried at three to confirm this. It would be nice if the manufacturer would state this plainly somewhere.

Comments about Datawatch Hot Dots Jr. ""Ace"" - the Talking, Teaching Dog:

I saw this and thought how engaging! My two year old was excited to get this home. We opened and he did about 20 flash cards without being bored. Overall it's a very educational item...if it works. Day 3 of trying to use "doggy" he started telling my son all his right answers were wrong
I took the pen away which caused a melt down, but I didn't want you son confused. Changed batteries, did research and nothing. The pen is just defective and at this point I am not willing buy another one just to waste money. Wish they could ensure a better pen then the product would be great

Comments about Datawatch Hot Dots Jr. ""Ace"" - the Talking, Teaching Dog:

Hi there
I bought a set a and an extra pen for my pre-k class. They loved them and so did I! Sad to say both pens stopped working within two months of buying them. I was very bummed! I changed the batteries and no luck:( I was told that the children had to be gentle with them which they were. What else can I try?

Comments about Datawatch Hot Dots Jr. ""Ace"" - the Talking, Teaching Dog:

WE love the idea behind using these, we had some older products, a set of card and the kids broke the "pen" that came with that. WE have 3-4 of these kicking around now and it's nice to have some extras as the cards are useless without them. It's really nice to be able to set them up with the work and then let them work through it on their own or while you are doing your stuff. They can practice it as much as they want. Unlike workbooks they aren't "used up" and my next child, and next child can use it too.

My 4.5yo daughter really enjoys this pen. She likes hearing all the sounds (luckily mostly the good sounds). It doesn't seem like she's had any problems with it. I like that there are quite a few different card sets that go along with it. I feel like we'll get some good mileage out of it.

good pen for hot dots jr. sets

    By

    About Me Parent

Comments about Datawatch Hot Dots Jr. ""Ace"" - the Talking, Teaching Dog:

We received this Hot Dots pen for use with the Hot Dots Jr. Patterns and Sequencing set. My sons were attracted to the shape of the pen and it made them more likely to use the review cards without prompting. When the pen is placed on the black circles next to the possible answers on the flash cards it will give feedback on whether the answer is correct or incorrect. With dog whimpering or enthusiastic "Way to go!" I found my kids trying out all answers on each card just to see the pens response. There seems to be 5-6 possible correct and 5-6 incorrect responses from the pen including sayings, sounds and vibration. Although a bit top heavy the pen is easy to hold. It can not be used as a regular pen, only as a response pen for Hot Dot sets. It works with the grade k+ sets as well as the jr. sets although I have been told it may not work with Hot Dot sets for older children. The price point may be a bit steep but when choosing a Hot Dots pen this is a very fun choice.

I received this item for review but all opinions are my own.

We purchased the Hot Dots Jr. Phonics and math sets a couple of years ago for our Pre-k class to use and they have loved it! The only problem now is that one of the Ace dogs isn't working properly. We have changed batteries to see if that would help, but no success. Is there any other suggestions as to what we can do to get him working properly again?

          Product adaption for autistic children

          About Me Educator

Comments about Datawatch Hot Dots Jr. ""Ace"" - the Talking, Teaching Dog:

I purchased this product and the learning cards for my client who has autistic tendencies and has had removal of half of his brain. We attend a facility where applied behavior analysis is used. Although I love the product and he is motivated by the lights, vibration and voice, he self stimulates by applying Ace to every dot. My suggestion would be that there is only a verbal response when a correct answer is given and no verbal response for a wrong answer. I would also like to see cards with less trials on each card. Autistic children do better with one task presented at a time.

My son received "Ace the talking dog" and workbooks from his grandparents. He is 3 and eager to learn. My son was excited when he received the correct answers. The first two days were great. Ace worked great, but after the second day, every answer he chose was wrong (even the correct answers). I thought maybe there was a special way he had to hold the pen; however, when I selected the right answer it did not work for me either. Now, my son is no longer interested in the workbooks. :(

My granddaughter received Hot Dogs Jr. math pre-k book 1 and the Ace pen for Christmas. She immediately enjoyed the activity and it has been helpful preparing her for kindergarten soon. I was looking into purchasing the Hot Dogs Jr. kindergarten activity. However, Ace stopped working and he responds to the correct answers as incorrect. I am concerned on whether to purchase another pen and the other activity books. I've just read other reviews and it seems the pen has become defective with other consumers. Is this going to be an ongoing issue even if I purchase a replacement? As I previously stated it was a gift for Christmas so her parents and I do not have any receipts. If the pen could be improved I would definitely give this activity a higher rating.

We received this along with the Princess wand, which my daughter loves. She's 4.5 years old and I found that this is too easy for her she knew all of the answers, so I try to improvise by talking about each object on the card and giving her some extra information... I would definitely recommend this to parents with kids getting ready to go to preschool or barely starting preschool. The carry-on box is also handy, I personally don't like toys with many pieces but toys that come with something handy like a briefcase or a box with a handle to store all the pieces are always a plus for me.

My preschooler loves these! She received the princess wand pen from EI as well. These are the perfect level of challenging for her - some she's mastered, other she's still learning to master. She loves the cards just as they are - as a mom of a toddler and a preschooler - I kind of wish they were on a large ring or in book form. Sometimes it's hard to keep track of all the cards. The box they arrive km is sturdy and certainly acceptable for storage - but the individual cards turn up on various places occasionally. All in all - these cards in combination with a pen of choice would make an excellent gift for any preschooler!

We received the Hot Dots, Jr. Beginning Science as a gift for our 3 kids ages 4.5 and 3 yr old twins. They love the challenge of finding the correct answer. I can either read the question to them or they can figure out what the match is on the card. Questions are engaging, thoughtful and allows them to ask me questions about the animal or plant on the card. Like where do potatoes grow? Or where does a bunny live? Then the typical toddler/preschooler question.... But why? I wish it came with its own wand. It comes separately. We did receive the magical wand with with the box and the wand fits inside the box which is great so the cards and wand won't get separated. This set will be great for rainy days, car trips, busy bag activities and anytime a busy mom needs a break.

Comments about Datawatch Hot Dots Jr. ""Ace"" - the Talking, Teaching Dog:

After only 1 day of play the pen no longer worked. Kept giving positive/green lights even when my son answered incorrectly. I switched the batteries and the problem continued. He did not play rough with it as I was with him the entire time to play. Sad that this toy only lasted 1 day. Disappointed!!!!
