I received this set about a month ago and have grown to like it quite a bit. The possibilities of how you can teach and what you can do revolving around every edge, curve, and vertex is endless!

The set comes with 24 durable nets (inserts) featuring real world designs such as a soup can, die, tent, ice cream cone, and many other real world shapes. Included as well, 8 common shapes: cube, cylinder, hexagonal prism, rectangular prism, triangular prism, square pyramid and triangular pyramid.

You'll find the activity guide very useful in giving you ideas in how you can use the Geometric Shapes. For example, younger children may enjoy the set more playing a mix and match learning game as well as finding other objects around the house that share the same general shape. Where as older kids can discuss points, design their own object nets to put inside the clear shape forms, and much more.

My husband and I both agreed that the Geometric shape pieces make great visual aid for many different types of lessons or activities. And the fact that you can get some construction paper or card stock to trace a shape, and make your own inserts makes this set very appealing.

My children are ages almost 2 years old and nearly 5. When we brought the set out to teach them, they mostly just stacked the pieces. My daughter caught on to the names of each shape really well. And I liked that she could see and handle how the dimensions were instead of just seeing the specific shape on paper. This set has prompted many questions from my daughter and she's even pointed out shapes in and outside our home that are similar to what I taught her when using this set.

Overall thoughts from our family is that because the shapes are muti-use and changeable we highly recommend this set in being a quite useful addition to any home or classroom.

Comments about Learning Resources Real World Folding Geometric Shapes:

I bought these geometric shapes to start introducing them to my pre-kindergartener with real life application. He loves them and how he can change what they are with the included nets. He especially loved the hay bale and used it to load up his toy tractor's wagon. The shape nets are made of a thin plastic material so it seems that they will last well. The reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because the open end caps do not snap on, so you have to use tape or something to hold them together or they fall out during use. I printed off the blank shape nets from the website thinking that we would be able to decorate them and put them inside, but they are not the same size. It would be nice if it included a plain white net for each shape so that you could decorate it with vis-a-vis type markers and then wash it and do it again with another design.

Comments about Learning Resources Real World Folding Geometric Shapes:

This is a fantastic product for muscle memory! What a great way to truly understand shapes in 3 dimensions, rather than abstractly or just on paper. This is very in line with Montessori education and provides a great learning experience in the classroom or at home.

            from Westminster, CA

Comments about Learning Resources Real World Folding Geometric Shapes:

This has been such a great resource in teaching a child the names of each 3D shape. The hands-on interaction with the shapes allows the kinesthetic students to learn the shapes by exploring and playing with them.

I also love how each shape has several real world items for the students to see and understand how the shape fits into each piece. This is such a great resource to teach so many different aspects about shapes: vertices, edges and points.

As a former educator, I would have LOVED to have this product in my classroom. I think that students would have been better able grasp this semi-difficult concept.

The only minor issue that we experienced is that a couple of the pieces did not always snap together easily and stick. This issue, however, would not prevent me from purchasing the product.

Comments about Learning Resources Real World Folding Geometric Shapes:

I am teaching my son preschool this school year at home and each week my son learns a new shape or color and on the weeks he learns a new shape, I help him "see" what each shape looks like with this Real World Folding Geometric Shapes kit.

They really help him relate 3-D geometric shapes to real-world objects and learn basic shapes as well!

The 24 durable inserts were really easy to insert in each shape and feature playful designs that my son can recognize and relate to! The shapes measure 3"H so they can be easily stored and played with and held with little hands.

So if you are trying to teach your children about shapes and 3D shapes, help them learn with these everyday items that they can hold.

Disclosure: I received this item for review in exchange for my honest opinion.

These were sent to me for review by LR and I was not disappointed...they are terrific and so much fun to use!

                      Advantage in School

Comments about Learning Resources Real World Folding Geometric Shapes:

You can use the flattened forms to teach symmetry and surface area with older children. There is an activity guide included that gives parents suggestions for discussion questions, such as, 'Which shapes have mostly rectangular faces?' There are many different activities in the guide, such as 'mix and match' where you remove all the 'nets' (the inserts) and lay them out next to the empty clear shapes and your child has to match up the flattened paper version of the shape to the 3dimensional plastic shapes.

ese shapes encourage her to make real world connections with her environment, such as realizing that an ice cream cone and a party hat are both the same cone shape. I like that the shapes offer something tangible that she can manipulate in her own hands, versus just looking at 2dimensional drawings of shapes in a book. To me, this is much more meaningful, and therefore, more memorable.

I feel like she will have an advantage when she starts learning about geometric shapes in school. My daughter already asked me if she could bring in the geometric shapes for share day at kindergarten this week, instead of her usual choice, a toy. All in all, I feel very satisfied with this product and would definitely recommend it.

Comments about Learning Resources Real World Folding Geometric Shapes:

Like all other Learning Resources products we've tried in our homeschooling classroom, the Real World Folding Geometric Shapes are high quality, durable, and realistic.

Included in this set/kit are eight common 3-D geometric shape solids, each made of clear plastic.

Also included are 24, glossy, full-color cardstock inserts which can be folded and placed inside the shapes, secured with a clear plastic side ("door") to hold each in place.

The rectangular prism can be a tent…then a piece of chocolate cake. The cone can be a party hat…and minutes later a Christmas tree. The switching out is easy and the real-world application is self-explanatory for little minds.

We are currently using a math curriculum that includes the 2-color abacus. This is by far the best manipulative that we own! It is designed for the children to "see" how numbers come together and interact. I've even learned a thing or two using it. When we use it for math, my girls can instantaneously see how to work a math equation or problem. Just yesterday, my daughter, age 5, wanted to measure a row of stacking cups she had put together. She pulled out the ruler and I suggested that she also use the abacus. To keep it simple we measured the cups in inches. The row of cups was much longer than a standard ruler so we imputed the amounts as we went along, on the abacus. Because she could "see" the quantity, she was able to tell me what the total measurement was. Brilliant!!! I will keep this tool for a long time to come. It's durable, easy to use and very efficient.
