The MFC-L8850CDW is a fast and loaded with impressive features and networking and it is built in. The MFC-L8850CDW is a large heavy printer. It also has a serious footprint: 19.3in Wide x 20.7in deep x 20.9 in High. The packaging is quite good as is typical for Brother and while the box had some dings the printer was in perfect condition. The setup was very simple and easy. The printer comes with TN331 standard yield cartridges that drop right in. They are good for 2500 pages B&W or 1500 pages Color. It can take the TN336 high yield cartridges that mean less frequent changes and printing that is more economical. I always get genuine Brother Cartridges. I connected the printer using the Ethernet cable to my Netgear router, install the software on my pc’s download the app for my iPad and Samsung Galaxy 4 and had everything configured and up and running in minutes. Driver installation was simple and consistent with other Brother Printer installations. When installed the driver finds the printer on the network and registers the PC with the MFC-L8850CDW so you can scan-to-PC from the device. This is a very nice touch! The installation installs PaperPort scanned document management from Scansoft. I found the large LCD touch screen both intuitive and attractive. It was easily use it for setup and to manage functions/settings of the printer/scanner/copier and fax at the printer. Printing is very quick. I believe the specifications are close to real world at 32ppm for both color and B&W. The MFC-L8850CDW has a quick first page print time. To get that the printer has a large surge current needed to warm the print drum/fuser. I used ordinary laser printer paper. I also used business card stock all with no issues. Bottom-line it does want I want it to do effortlessly and at a very good price point, Brother builds very good products that deliver every time. I have had many Brother Products and have never been disappointed. What I would like to see: An additional paper tray at a reasonable price, not one that cost almost as much as the printer did. An envelope cartridge/tray for high run mailing jobs Near Field connectivity.

I was looking for something to use in my home office that wouldn't end up being more of a hindrance than a help. It's really tempting to treat the space as "not a real workplace" or some such justification for not equipping it properly, but while I had a budget to improve things I looked at quite a few reviews online before settling on this model, and I'm glad I did. The one thing I do think is totally sleazy about all printer manufacturers - and unfortunately this includes Brother - is the way they have apparently conspired to form a toner cartel "ink fixing" arrangement where every single one of them microchips their products so we are entrapped in this long expensive transaction that never ends. I'm not stupid enough to believe that the market is spontaneously producing that result since there's such a high demand for refills ........... Obviously a bunch of golfing buddies in a smoke filled room came up with that nonsense and it's really a shame that the productivity of millions of people is being hindered by a few cronies' fear of losing toner sales. For that very good reason I am giving you one lonely star. But hey, other than the whole getting price gouged for the entire life of the product thing, it's great!!

Terrible Network Connectivity

By

from Phoenix, AZ, United States

Comments about Brother MFC-L8850CDW Wireless Color Laser All-in-One, Duplex Printing/Scanning:

I have owned quite a few Brother printers and I needed to upgrade my 9970CDW so I bought this one. I have had the last 4 Brother printers directly connected to my network router via an Ethernet cable, no problem with any of those regarding use as a network printer. This one in the same setup with the latest drivers/firmware (and calls to Brother Tech Support), does not work well as a network printer. It requires multiple Network Resets a day from the tools menu. It's not my setup it's the new Brother printers, because I have seen this with another new model of printer from Brother (I will review that one separately). I even reconnected an older Brother printer and to the setup and it worked as expected, to eliminate the possibility of a setup error. I don't know why the design process went backwards, but the fact of the matter is that it is functionally useless as a network printer when someone has to go to it nearly every time they want print something and engage the Network Reset. I will not be considering Brother in the future for my Network Printers based on this printer.

Dumbfounded

By

from Texas

Comments about Brother MFC-L8850CDW Wireless Color Laser All-in-One, Duplex Printing/Scanning:

This all-in-one was everything I expected and it performed as advertised. I was thrilled about my purchase until I needed to print an envelope. I was stunned to learn that, in order to print an envelope (or stamps or anything other than 81/2 x 11 paper), my secretary has to lift the 54 lb. printer up, move it away from the wall and turn it around, open up the back, press down on two levers, and insert an envelope. This was a deal killer and I am returning the machine for a refund. I'm sure Brother discloses this information somewhere and I should have read it. It just never occurred to me that anyone would build a printer that required the user to do this.

Ink is too expensive

The ink doesn't last long enough and it cost too much. The printer is slow.

Ok printer

By

from Medford, WI, United States

Comments about Brother MFC-L8850CDW Wireless Color Laser All-in-One, Duplex Printing/Scanning:

I wanted to upgrade from my HP All in One black & white laser to color laser and I wanted 2 sided scanning so I chose this printer. The features are nice but it is much slower printing, even in only black & white. It seems to lose connection with my computers periodically which resulted in me needing to re-install the printer software several times. I do like the color printing and 2-sided copy/scan feature. In the end, I feel like I've gained some things but also lost printing speed and ease to install/connect. I can only give it an average rating.

Great Features

By

Comments about Brother MFC-L8850CDW Wireless Color Laser All-in-One, Duplex Printing/Scanning:

All the ControlCenter4 are great with the exception that I cannot prevent automatic numbering of file names. Click Button Settings, Click Change enter Filename, press enter, then a number is automatically assigned to the filename. I cannot turn it off and your tech support gets all lost in what I am saying and cannot figure it out.

Staff has no issues in the months of use they have had, just good performance. We have used many printers before, but switching to these Brother color laser printers was a great decision. Drivers, installation and maintenance is simple and fast. Good performers.

Nice all in one.

By

from Tuscola, IL, United States

Comments about Brother MFC-L8850CDW Wireless Color Laser All-in-One, Duplex Printing/Scanning:

Love this printer. A pleasant surprise was the document scanner. Being able to scan both sides of a sheet in one pass makes it very fast. Setting up shortcuts and some other networking tweaks took a little longer, but just because I came from using HP printers and there was a bit of a learning curve. This printer appears to be aimed at small businesses, but makes a great home all-in-one.

Fast, clear copies

By

from North San Francisco Bay

Comments about Brother MFC-L8850CDW Wireless Color Laser All-in-One, Duplex Printing/Scanning:

I moved up from an 8 year-old HP MFC. This unit offered both the quality and the duplexing of both copying and printing that I wanted. It is amazingly fast. I particularly like the front loading special paper feeder. For some reason, multi-page scanning is not always recognized by Mac's Preview. So, I use PDFpen Pro or Read IRIS to scan and save multi-page PDF's. I do miss HPePrint.

We like our MFC-L8850CDW printer

By

from Washington State

Comments about Brother MFC-L8850CDW Wireless Color Laser All-in-One, Duplex Printing/Scanning:

We've had this printer for 2 months and find it a great tool. All aspects of copying, printing, duplexing, scanning function very well. It prints at a relatively high speed. Pictures tend to be a bit dark, so we increase their brightness by 10% before printing. The door to the bypass tray hangs up on the lower tray door, so it takes an extra step of pushing on the lower tray cover to open the upper tray. All said and done, this printer has operated above expectations for us.

Comments about Brother MFC-L8850CDW Wireless Color Laser All-in-One, Duplex Printing/Scanning:

Bought this printer through Costco. I read reviews on just about every printer in this price range and they all had negatives, but this one had the least. So far this printer has exceeded my expectations. Efficient, quiet, fast, and great quality. Highly recommend for a small office setting.

Nice amenities.

By

Comments about Brother MFC-L8850CDW Wireless Color Laser All-in-One, Duplex Printing/Scanning:

Previously I owned a 9970 model. It was great! The 8850 seems to frequently lose to my wireless network. Very frustrating. Also it goes into a beeping mode sometimes. I installed a switch on its plug so I can flip the switch to reset it. Again frustrating. Beeping mode is so loud I can hear it in my bedroom and can't sleep.
