We purchased the WF-5690 directly from the Epson store. We selected this printer as an alternative to a laser printer because: 1. higher print resolution than many laser printers 2. PostScript support 3. availability of 788XXL very high capacity ink cartridges 4. reasonably priced ink cartridges 5. works with Mac and Windows The print speed is good, and it probably prints 5 very colorful pages per minute. Not as fast as a laser printer, but much faster than the older inkjet that we replaced it with. Our "very colorful" pages are brochure-like, not the business graphics pages that these sorts of printers spec with. We're happy with the print speed. The unit itself is stable and doesn't wiggle around during printing like our old inkjet printer. It is also quiet. We haven't exercised the fax, copier, nor scanner functionality yet, but we have printed about 800 pages so far, and already replaced the original free cartridges that came with the unit with the larger cartridges. Since we are using this printer as a laser replacement, we didn't need photo-quality printing on glossy paper. Since it spec's a high dpi, it is probably good but we haven't tried to print on glossy paper yet. I don't think that Epson is targeting the photo market with this printer (they have other printers for photos). The only issue that we had was that the printer arrived with a bow in the plastic front door that prevented it from closing completely (thus triggering a "close the door" message on the LCD screen). Although we would have been happy if Epson just sent a new plastic door, they actually sent a whole new printer and free shipping on the returned unit. So Epson Support gets a gold star also. We like the touch screen interface, the ease of replacing the ink cartridges, and the ease of loading paper. We didn't get the extra paper tray, but we may purchase that in the future. So far, I can't find anything that I don't like about this printer. Scott

I would be sending this printer back if it wasn't for the fact that the ink is very water resistant (I have tested this), and that the ink economy is comparable to color laser. My color laser printer needed new drums which would cost almost as much as this printer.

The PROS:
The ink is very water resistant, so it doesn't bleed when it gets wet.
This machine's interface is much nicer than my previous system that had a text only display that wasn't back-lit, but the scrolling could use bigger buttons or have physical UP and DOWN buttons for scrolling.
Epson's software for Windows software works well in Windows XP, which is good, because I need to run it in a virtual machine for use with Macintosh and Linux.
The scanner feeder doesn't get jammed easily.
There is quite mode available in the scanner software which does make scans quieter; very helpful when someone is trying to sleep nearby.
Somewhat good is that the Epson software for Windows has PDF/OCR capabilities that rivals a PDF program that I bought over $100 for use with my previous multi-function printer (both don't let you fine tone or edit the OCR results).

The CONS:
Epson's software for Macintosh lacks OCR.
Scanning to USB drive does not allow for color multi-page TIFFs; you have to use Epson's Macintosh or Windows software for that and save via a computer.
You cannot duplex scan legal size documents, you have to manually scan each side one at a time. Epson's software allows you to add pages after each scan, but does not help collate scanned pages over than manually dragging pages around in the software's layout view. The software has a decent graphical interface, but not enough to help you when you have dozens of pages to collate for double-sided and you desperately need to shuffle sides A with sides B in reverse order. I know of a program for PDF to handle this, but Epson's Document Capture Pro will not accept those PDF's once they are modified by a non-Epson program. I will have to write code for collate a multi-page TIFF.
Epson's Document Capture Pro will let you arrange pages and fix skews, but does not offer cropping, so you need to perform cropping in scan preview and then scan if you need cropping.

I've had the unit for a month. The 5690 meets all expectations and conforms to specifications. Still learning features. Online manual is helpful, perhaps a bit too lengthy. Could be designed to more easily to ID specific "how to" unit feature I need to complete a specific task.

Comments about Epson WorkForce Pro WF-5690 Inkjet Multifunction Printer - Color - Plain Paper Print - Desktop:

My old standby photosmart printer was not able to speak with my new printer, and I went looking. Fortunately fate was with me, and I discovered the WorkForce 5690. I was a little skeptical about all the "good things" I read about the Epson; however, my apprehensions were quickly put to rest when I started using my new wireless. The printing speed and the quality of the print is worth the price alone. It is equally great for scanning, faxing, and copying as I was able to use those features with ease and satisfaction.

Great Printer

Comments about Epson WorkForce Pro WF-5690 Inkjet Multifunction Printer - Color - Plain Paper Print - Desktop:

I've only just set this printer up, but previously had a near identical model, the WF-4630. Both printers get good reviews, and that's why I just got the WF-5690. My only issue I have with this new printer is that my old one used the same ink (786) and I had just purchased it when the motherboard on 4630 failed. So when I was setting the new printer, it wouldn't allow me to put the XL786 into it during configuration saying the ink was low, when in fact it was never used, just package opened and installed into the 4630. I had to use starter ink that came with this printer. I am returning the XL786 inks for a full refund. Seems ink over designed that create false failure.

Comments about Epson WorkForce Pro WF-5690 Inkjet Multifunction Printer - Color - Plain Paper Print - Desktop:

I've had my WF-5690 for a month and it operates flawlessly. I purchased it from Epson directly, it arrived in three days, sturdily-boxed, and the setup was simple and straightforward. It operates swiftly and quietly, and has excellent build quality. Ink is smudge-proof and the starter cartridges, which came with the unit, are only one-eighth empty after a month's-worth of aggressive printing. (I expected them to be empty in a week.) Print clarity is excellent; daily I print documents, spreadsheets, paychecks and financial statements, all having some small-typeface entries down to 8- or 6-point, and not one streak, blotch or mis-formed character anywhere. None! And, no mis-feeds or other nonsense. Paper-handling has been without incident. I cannot convey here how much I agonized pre-purchase about whether to go laser or ink jet, and I made myself sick with laying out all the choices on a schedule. This went on for two months. Epson, hands-down, has the best online site for printers, with everything together on one screen (the printers, the ink, the accessories) so this makes it a no-brainer to go with a WorkForce Pro. I'm thrilled, and I heartily recommend this product to anyone needing a new office printer. (No, I am not an Epson employee and they have not asked me to review this purchase.) Just thoroughly satisfied.

New Printer BRICKED

Comments about Epson WorkForce Pro WF-5690 Inkjet Multifunction Printer - Color - Plain Paper Print - Desktop:

DO NOT BUY THIS PRINTER. I received it brand new out of the box today, got it set up perfectly, and printed a test page. It then updated its firmware and it's been unusable every since (it's been hours). I can't turn it off for fear of never recovering it, and it doesn't respond to anything. I now need to repackage it and remail it back to the vendor. I'm fairly handy with computers and networks, and if I can't make this work then it isn't worth your time. If I could give it less than one star I would have.

Dissatisfied with the Epson WorkForce Pro WF-5690

By

Comments about Epson WorkForce Pro WF-5690 Inkjet Multifunction Printer - Color - Plain Paper Print - Desktop:

Don't believe the hype. Printer is over-rated. The 45,000 color page monthly duty cycle*2 is not true, more like 1200 page tops. Plus the price of cartridges is extremely high, bring down the prices. Thank you.

They Should Have Called it WorkHORSE

By

Comments about Epson WorkForce Pro WF-5690 Inkjet Multifunction Printer - Color - Plain Paper Print - Desktop:

I couldn't be happier with my WorkForce Pro WF-5690's performance! The quality of copies - whether documents or photos - is crisp and clear. The speed of output is ten times better than my old Canon All-In-One, and the XXL ink cartridges seem to last forever. This was by far one of my best purchase decisions in 2015.

A Fine Printer

By

from Naples, FL

Comments about Epson WorkForce Pro WF-5690 Inkjet Multifunction Printer - Color - Plain Paper Print - Desktop:

Overall, I'm very impressed. It delivers high quality text at a rapid speed. Much better than my previous laser printer. Text is dry and smudge free. Photos require some drying time. Photo quality is very good for a 3 color printer. Here are a few nitpicking comments: * The recommended software download included some apps that were already out of date. Software update solved the problem. * The printer was generally well packaged. However, removal of the packaging around the printer head was not intuitive, requiring some careful unpacking to avoid breaking styrofoam into the printer mechanism, or perhaps damaging the printer head. * The rear feed doesn't seem to handle some jobs that it should. I can't print an 8.5 x 3.5 inch voucher size check. The text is rotated 90 degrees with respect to the preprinting and I see no way of correcting the problem. When I choose the rear feed, the option to print portrait or landscape disappears. Page Setup doesn't help. I'm using a Mac OS 10.9.5 * Use of the rear feeder seems generally awkward. Often, I get a size discrepancy pop-up notice that I have to override in order to print. * These are may initial impressions after the first few days. Perhaps I will learn more about the rear feeder. *YES, I WOULD BUY THIS PRINTER AGAIN. My wife knows that I'm a nitpicker.

AWSOME Printer Fast, compact, beautiful colors, offers lots of options. 1 big draw back. Not very easy to set up for a simple thing like scanning a document to an email address. I called in my cousin who is in IT and he couldn't figure out how to hook that 1 MAJOR function up. I don't have access to our SERVER 5 states away! BESIDES that its pretty awesome.

Great Duplex Scan and Duplex Print

By

from Undisclosed

Comments about Epson WorkForce Pro WF-5690 Inkjet Multifunction Printer - Color - Plain Paper Print - Desktop:

I always wanted a duplex scan and duplex Print. Not often we get this spec on a printer with this price. I bought a Laser printer which said it is duplex scan, print. But actually it does duplex print but not duplex scan. This printer nicely does the Duplex Scan and Duplex Print. (Scan two side and print two side). But, it does in two pass Scan and two pass print. which mean, it will scan one side and pull the paper back and scan the other side. Which is bit time consuming. Similarly, it will print one side and pull the paper back to print the other side. Which is fine. The one pass duplex and one pass print is available on High end professional printer costing way higher than this printer. The ink is smudge free. I tested. :). The printer has no vibration while printing. Quality of print is like laser. This printer lacks cropping of image after scan. This feature is use full when you scan a passport and to get rid of black around the image, for example. I think we can handle this from a computer. Over all for home / small office use, this is a Great Printer.
