I must say I'm confused by the negative reviews. I've had this product, #878xx for about 2 years and it's been flawless. I can easily staple 25 pages with one hand and don't have to slam it on the desk to punch thru all the sheets, just a squeeze will do it. I've even done up to 28 or 30 pages at a time and while more effort is needed, it still did the job. I always use Swingline S.F.4 staples also. No jams, ever. Wonder if the others are using bargain or lower quality staples. Use the right staples; I wouldn't put 87 octane in a Porsche. I bought the same stapler for my son when I just took him to college.

I write this review based on the currently available 878xx Optima stapler. I feel I need to say that because I have an approximately 8 year old unit that I would give 5 stars to all day long. My old one just works. Swingline staples, cheap office store staples all no problems. 2 sheets 25 sheets no problem. I've gone even higher in the sheet count with a little extra persuasion and it will still handle it (unless I try and get really stupid). So with this history it was no question that I would purchase another one when I had to get one for a co-worker. Upon receipt I initially noticed the new one was substantially lighter than my old unit. It might still be made of metal but the new unit must use significantly thinner material. (along the lines of the old 747 vs. the new 747). Figuring it would still be a significant improvement over his old mostly plastic unit we kept it. Unfortunately not. It has been the most jam prone unit I think I have ever seen. If I can get it to successfully staple, the bent over legs of the staple are no way near symmetrical. I am not sure if the issue is in the stapler body or in the die plate. Just this morning it took me three shots to get a successful staple in three sheets of standard copy paper. On a full strip of staples it will jam up at least ten times. Jams that require completely emptying the unit and removing the jammed staple(s) with pliers. I would estimate that no more than 25% of the staples in a full strip get properly stapled. Usually one leg is good and the other leg ends up in a twisted mess. We are so annoyed with the new unit that it gets passed around to other co-workers as a joke. We will not be purchasing any more of these units unfortunately. As for my old stapler...you'll have to pry it from my cold dead hands :)

Jams after every staple

By

from DeForest, WI, USA

Comments about Swingline Optima Desktop Stapler:

Printed on the stapler it says "Jam Free Guaranteed" this staplers jams every single staple. After each staple you have to open the stapler before you can staple again.

This stapler is terrible!

By

from San Diego, CA, USA

Comments about Swingline Optima Desktop Stapler:

I'm almost shocked by how terrible this stapler is! I don't have much use for staplers, most of my written work existing in digital format. But occasionally I do need to put some printed documents together, and that's why I bought this Optima model a few years ago. I hardly ever use it. It most definitely has NOT been abused. Yet just now I tried to use it for the first time in months…and it simply doesn't work. Filled with staples, but won't do the job. And as you can tell from looking here on the site, this isn't a cheap model. But no matter how fancy or expensive it is…what good is a stapler that doesn't staple? Shouldn't that be the primary focus of the design? It's not heavy enough for a doorstop, and I don't have enough paperwork on my desk to use it as a paperweight. Plain and simple, it's a piece of junk! DON'T BUY IT!

FAKE NEWS

By

from BC, Canada

Comments about Swingline Optima Desktop Stapler:

This stapler has a big bright yellow sticker on the side advertising its' "JAM FREE GUARANTEE". It is currently sitting on the desk at my work jammed up with nobody able to fix it. Not only did it jam, it jammed worse than any other stapler anyone has ever seen. Also, we are using "high quality staples", whatever that means. Garbage product, would not recommend.

This product SUCKS

By

from Berkey, OH 43504, USA

Comments about Swingline Optima Desktop Stapler:

I have one of your staplers sitting next to me. The numbers on the bottom, which are inked on, so that they come off, areT1432 9. On the side of this non-functional paper weight, is in rather large print, "Jam Free" and under that it says, "Guaranteed". There is a lie here, either "Jam Free" or, we will see, "Guaranteed". We are a pre-school and have paperwork that many times need to be stapled. We bought this paper weight thinking it will serve our needs. It certainly did not, nor live up to your hype. We use the required "Premium Staples", still it jams.

Can't stop jams

By

from Champaign, Illinois

Comments about Swingline Optima Desktop Stapler:

After a few months of light use, it now jams every time I try to use it. The bar which presses on the staples will not retract, so the next staple can never advance. Like many others, I am both surprised and disappointed that Swingline would make such an inferior product.

NOT Jam Free

By

from Goodhue, MN 55027, USA

Comments about Swingline Optima Desktop Stapler:

The stapler says "Jam Free Guarantee" on the side, but it certainly is not that. Jams on me all the time. This last time as I was unjamming it, the whole unit came apart into 5 different pieces. Not worth my time to try and fix. Nice looking stapler, but after a year of use, it's going in the trash. Too bad.

Time to Make a QC visit to the Factory in China!

By

from Van Nuys, Los Angeles, CA, USA

Comments about Swingline Optima Desktop Stapler:

We have 2 of these Model 878xx staplers in our office, an older issue and the current version. Both of these "Jam Free Guaranteed*" labeled staplers continue to jam which costs us time & $!. In a business, ROI is essential to profitability, so professional quality tools are purchased with the expectation of required performance. These staplers are not of the quality level we expected from ACCO/Swingline!

Would have been a wonderful stapler

By

from NY

Comments about Swingline Optima Desktop Stapler:

This product is used by a teacher for stapling papers for students and parents. Unfortunately, the Jam Free Guarantee is not a true statement. This stapler is jammed and now it will not open up to remove the jammed staples. It is very frustrating when you spend money on a product only for it to break in less than 1 year of use. Overall disappointed in this Optima Model 878xx stapler.

Makes a Great Paper Weight!

By

from Woodridge, IL, USA

Comments about Swingline Optima Desktop Stapler:

This is my 4th attempt at having a review accepted. They have all been rejected, apparently because they were somewhat critical. I have read the review guidelines and cannot find anything inappropriate about my previous attempts to express my disappointment with my stapler that just will not work and never did. Therefore, let me say, it is a wonderful and terrific stapler, especially when used as a paper weight. It really holds paper to the desk, ever under powerful windy conditions.

OOPS it sticks

By

from Cordova, Memphis, TN, USA

Comments about Swingline Optima Desktop Stapler:

#878xx Sorry to say, save your money. I purchased this stapler to replace a desk stapler which I used for 20 plus years but it would not staple 25 pages. Thus I purchased the 878 which will staple 25 pages but only for awhile. After about 3 months it sticks. Even with NO Staples in it. I am very disappointed in this product. To spend the extra dollars to have a stapler which will not work. What can I say. Send me a refund, please

Jamming problems

By

from Middlesex, NJ, USA

Comments about Swingline Optima Desktop Stapler:

We have two of your Jam Free Guaranteed staplers in black and both have the same problem. I believe it to be a design flaw, when you push down the part that assists in pushes the staple out becomes hung up on the guide that is supposed to control the top mechanism of the stapler. The only way to release this top part is to open the stapler.

Stapler will not stay open!

By

from Dallas, TX

Comments about Swingline Optima Desktop Stapler:

I have had my stapler about two years now. Recently, the spring that holds the stapler open to be able to insert the papers you want to staple, is no longer functioning (and may be missing). What does this mean? I have to open the jaw of the stapler and insert pages, then after I staple, the jaw has to be re-opened to remove the stapled pages. This is frustrating and I will have to find another stapler soon. Otherwise the stapler has worked well.
